Introduction

A very good morning to one and all. I want to begin by thanking you for your prayerful fellowship. This morning, I want to give you three statements for you to consider, reflect upon, and complete for yourself. They are all about the reason for our salvation.

  1. God saved us because He loves us.
His saving work is rooted in His immeasurable love (John 3:16).
  2. The Lord’s purpose for saving us is so that we might bring glory to Him—to be trophies of His grace, living examples to one another of His mercy at work in us and through us (Ephesians 2:7; 1 Peter 2:9).
  3. We are most like Christ when we serve one another.
Our Lord’s life on earth was marked by humble service (Mark 10:45). Wherever He went, whatever He said, whatever He did—He did it in the power of the Spirit, with a heart to serve.

Setting the Context

Over the past weeks, we have gone through eight topics on servanthood:

  1. God’s call to servanthood
  2. The servant spirit
  3. The model of servanthood
  4. The pattern of servanthood
  5. Servanthood as commitment
  6. Servanthood involving hard work and sacrifice
  7. Submission in service
  8. Being equipped for service

This morning we come to our ninth topic:
“Principles from God’s Word for Fruitful Service.”
If the Lord does not return, next week we will consider the rewards for faithful service.

Why This Matters

Service is not optional—it is commanded by the Lord (John 12:26). It brings blessing to others, fulfillment to our own lives, and eternal reward from God (Matthew 25:21). We serve not to earn God’s love—we already have that—but to show His love to the world.

When we serve in God’s way, God gives us grace, guidance, and a joy the world cannot take away.

Five Biblical Principles for Fruitful Service

  1. Volunteerism – Serving Willingly

Scripture: John 10:17–18 – “I lay down my life… No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.”

  • A faithful servant does not wait to be begged or forced into service.
  • A willing heart is quick to act when a need arises—not only when it is convenient.
  • Jesus is our ultimate example: He willingly gave His life, spent time with the sick, touched the untouchable, and made Himself available.
  • Old Testament example: Exodus 35:5, 22 – “Whoever is of a willing heart…”
  • Application: Ask yourself—“What is it that I would not do for the Lord?” If the answer reveals self-righteousness or reluctance, surrender that area to Him.
  1. Without Comparison – Serving Humbly

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 10:12 – “We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves…”

  • Comparison takes our eyes off the Lord.
  • It breeds anger, envy, bitterness, pride, or discouragement.
  • True servants focus on the task God has given them, not on how their service measures against another’s.
  • God has made you unique. Walk in His plan for your life.
  • Application: Focus on ownership (“Everything I have is from God”), operation (Serve without criticism), and objective (God cares about your heart, not your ranking).
  1. No Exclusion – Serving Inclusively

Scripture: John 13:34 – “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another…”

  • No one is too young or too old to serve.
  • No one should be excluded from receiving service.
  • Jesus served lepers, children, the blind—people society avoided.
  • Application: In our ministries, resist cliques, favoritism, or segregation. Serve all whom God places before you.
  1. Commitment – Serving Faithfully

Scripture: Ruth 1:16; Esther 4:16

  • Ruth’s words to Naomi: “Your God will be my God…”—commitment without conditions.
  • Esther’s courage: “If I perish, I perish”—commitment despite the cost.
  • Paul’s example in Acts 20—willing to pay the price for the Gospel.
  • Application:
    • Discover and develop your gifts by involving yourself.
    • Endure challenges without quitting.
    • Strive for work that will last—gold, silver, precious stones (1 Cor. 3:12).
  1. God Gives the Increase – Serving Dependently

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3:6–7 – “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.”

  • The results of our service belong to God.
  • We are called to faithfulness, not to guarantee visible results.
  • This truth keeps us from both pride and despair.
  • Application: Preach, serve, encourage—leave the fruit to God.

Living Out the Principles

When we apply these five principles—volunteerism, humility, inclusion, commitment, and dependence on God—the Word of God spreads and disciples multiply (Acts 6:7).

Your quiet prayers, your consistent Christian living, your unseen acts of service—God sees them, and He is working through them.

Closing Challenge

Ask yourself:

  • In what ways is the Lord challenging me to serve?
  • What is my next step in obedience?
  • Am I serving from the heart, or am I driven by comparison, recognition, or convenience?

Closing Prayer (adapted from transcript)

Gracious God, our heavenly Father, we thank You for the Lord Jesus Christ, our perfect model of servanthood. We praise You for His willing sacrifice for our salvation. Forgive us when we compare or complain in service. Give us hearts that serve willingly, humbly, inclusively, faithfully, and dependently. Teach us to labour with discipline, sacrifice, patience, and endurance, leaving the results to You. Raise up in our assembly a new generation of servants whose lives reflect the love of Christ. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
