The Greatest Love Story Ever Told
Introduction: A Special Evening
Good evening. I’m surprised—and encouraged—to see so many in the hall this evening, especially the Sunday School scholars. Please raise your hands. It is truly encouraging to see you here.
I understand many of you were recently at the youth camp in Mersing, and I hope that encouragement continues as you attend more of the assembly meetings.
Some shared with me a month ago that they would be traveling in December, which is why I’m pleasantly surprised to see many of you here tonight.
Meanwhile, my wife and daughters are enjoying dim sum and roast goose in Hong Kong. About half an hour ago, my daughter texted me, “Daddy, you know…”—so that was nice of them. But I thank God that as Christians, we have a spiritual family. I never feel lonely, even when my physical family is not with me.
Today is a very special day for several reasons.
First, for those attending our church for the first time—the choir does not present like this every week. These presentations are reserved for special occasions. Perhaps after today, you may encourage them to do more—we would all be blessed.
Second, for sports fans, in about five hours, the World Cup final will take place—Messi against Mbappé. If you’re not sure which countries they belong to, you can go and find out.
But most importantly, today is a very special day for Gary and Zachary Tan, whom I met only last week. Before meeting them, I thought they were brothers—until I found out they are father and son. How special is that?
Today, they will go through the waters of baptism together, publicly professing their faith and expressing their union with Jesus Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection—walking in newness of life.
We also pray that today will be a special day for those who have yet to know Christ—that you may take a step toward accepting Him and receiving the new life He offers.
The Gospel Is for Everyone
The gospel I share today is the same message I heard when I was 12 years old. Later, by faith, I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and committed my life to Him during my secondary school days.
So what exactly is the good news?
To me, the good news is captured in one verse. If I had only ten seconds left in my life, this is the verse I would share:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” — John 3:16
Let me repeat that.
This single verse contains the greatest love story ever told. It is clear, simple, and unambiguous. It is not a message for a privileged few—it is a gift offered to all.
God loves the world—every person—despite our rebellion, rejection, sins, and wrongdoing.
And He proved His love by giving His only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to die on the cross so that we may be reconciled to Him—restored into a right relationship with God.
The Problem: Sin and Separation
But why do we need reconciliation? What went wrong?
In the beginning, as recorded in Genesis, everything God created was very good.
When we visit places like Gardens by the Bay or the Singapore Zoo, we see beauty—lush greenery, waterfalls, vibrant plants, and animals. It feels almost perfect.
Now imagine creation as God originally made it—perfect harmony, abundant provision, no lack, no conflict.
Then God created Adam and Eve, our first parents.
Sin entered the world when they disobeyed God’s command in the Garden of Eden. They gave in to temptation and took the fruit God had forbidden.
Because of that disobedience, sin entered the world.
Scripture says in Romans 5:
“Just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin… so death spread to all men because all sinned.”
The Bible teaches that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Sin is falling short of God’s standard. It appears in our actions and attitudes—lying, stealing, greed, lust, hatred, envy, selfishness.
We have all gone astray.
The world today reflects this reality. Every time we turn on the news, we see turmoil and brokenness.
Sin leads to death—and ultimately, separation from God.
And that is serious, because God is holy. He cannot ignore sin without compromising His character.
God’s Remedy: The Cross of Christ
But God is also loving.
Because He loves us, He provided a remedy for sin.
The Bible tells us we have been purchased by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. It cost God His one and only Son.
Jesus was crucified—one of the most horrific forms of execution.
Before the cross, He was beaten, spat upon, whipped, crowned with thorns, and nailed through His hands and feet.
Scripture tells us His appearance was so marred that He was hardly recognizable.
Friends, when you look at the cross, see this: it is His love for you.
He hung there for us. He laid down His life for us.
Romans 5 says:
“While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
He died to bring us back to God.
The Bible also says:
“Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.”
God made Jesus—who had no sin—to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.
Though He committed no sin, He took upon Himself the penalty of every sin ever committed.
The Victory: The Resurrection
But the story does not end at the cross.
The good news is that Jesus rose again on the third day.
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to the tomb, and an angel declared:
“He is not here; He has risen.”
The resurrection is the most important event in history.
Without it, there is no Christianity.
As Scripture says:
“If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain… you are still in your sins.”
Without the resurrection, there is no salvation, no forgiveness, no eternal life.
But Christ has been raised.
Romans 4 tells us He was raised for our justification—proving that the price for sin has been fully paid.
The resurrection assures us that:
Jesus said in John 14:
“I go to prepare a place for you… that where I am, you may be also.”
The Only Way to Salvation
Jesus is the Son of God—the only one who can give life.
John 20:31 says:
“That by believing you may have life in His name.”
And Jesus Himself said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Everything we are searching for—whether in relationships, careers, or entertainment—will ultimately be empty without Christ.
Through Him, we are brought back into a right relationship with God.
We are justified, forgiven, and made fit to be in His presence forever.
And this cannot be earned.
The Bible says:
“By grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God, not by works.”
An Invitation: Come to the Cross
I invite those who do not yet believe—come to the cross.
This message alone can truly change a life.
As believers, we look forward to the day we meet the Lord face to face.
Some of you may reject Him.
Some may delay.
But if you receive Him, He will make you a new creation:
“The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
You may think you cannot change your lifestyle or habits—but transformation comes through the power of God.
Do not wait.
Life is short. Time is uncertain.
The average life expectancy in Singapore is about 83 years. In a moment, life can change—or end.
Be wise. Build your house on the rock, not on sand.
The most important thing in life is not what you possess—but what you believe.
Only through believing in Jesus Christ can you receive eternal life.
Call to Response
What must one do to be saved?
The Bible says:
“If you declare with your mouth ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” — Romans 10:9
Tonight, I invite you to put your trust in Christ.
If you are ready, you may pray this prayer:
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus,
I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness.
I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead.
I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my life as my Lord and Savior.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
If you prayed this prayer or have questions, please speak to me or another believer who can guide you in this new life.
Conclusion
Today you have heard about the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the gift of eternal life.
I encourage you to read the Gospel of John for yourself—to discover who Jesus is and what He has promised.
Next Sunday is Christmas—a time to celebrate the birth of Christ. Do join us again.
Have a blessed evening.
