AC, a youth in our assembly, shares how reflecting on the humble birth of Christ at Christmas has reshaped the way he sees worth, purpose, and love—and drawn his heart again to God’s heart for those the world often overlooks.
Have you ever looked at someone else and just felt… small? Like they seem to have everything such as success, admiration, recognition while you’re just there watching from the sidelines? The crazy thing about Christmas is that God didn’t choose those people when He sent His greatest gift. He chose the ones nobody paid attention to.
Look at the group who first heard about Jesus’ birth.
The shepherds who were the lowest working class, spending their nights out in the cold with animals.
The wise men. Yes, they were smart and respected, but in Israel they were still outsiders. Yet they saw the star.
Mary and Joseph, who were completely ordinary. They came from Nazareth, a town people looked down on. Joseph worked with his hands and was poor enough to offer the cheapest sacrifice at the temple. Yet God gave them the privilege of raising the Saviour.
Meanwhile, the people with status like the rulers, priests, officials which had too much going on. Their hearts were filled with comfort, pride, or their own ambitions. So when God moved, they didn’t even notice.
Here’s the point: God blesses the ones who actually have space for Him. Jesus said it’s hard for the rich to enter the kingdom, not because money is evil, but because being too attached to this world makes our hearts crowded.
So what should we do?
Like the disciples, we need to drop the “nets” we’re gripping so tightly which are the things that slowly become idols without us realising. God gave His Son completely for us. In return, He wants our whole heart. If something has taken His place, be honest with God, repent, and ask Him to help you refocus on Christ again.
